Sports betting terms glossary

Parimutuel betting (also Mutuel, Tote or Totalisator)– a betting system whereby all bets concerning the same event are placed together in the pool, taxes are usually removed, and when the event's outcome is known the pool is shared among all winning bets.

Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) – French company which is the number one horse racing monopoly in Europe and the 2nd largest betting organization in the world; apart from their online betting service, it is available in more than 30 countries from more than 8 800 locations.
 
Parlay – see Multiple bet.
 
Patent bet – comprises of 7 bets involving 3 selections in different events, that is 3 singles, 3 doubles, and one Treble. At least one successful selection is required to obtain a return.
 
Paysafecard – electronic payment method based on a pre-pay system.
 
Pesapallo (Finnish baseball) vs Baseball – Pesapallo is a faster and more tactical variation of baseball. Pesapallo differs from baseball in the following ways: distances between the bases vary, the batter doesn't run after hitting the ball on his first/second strike, the player has to zig-zag the court as the bases are not in a diamond shape, plus a number of other minor dissimilarities.
 
Picks – betting selections made by experts.

Pointspread (also Spread, Handicap, or Line) – an advantage given to the underdog.

Pre-paid card vs Credit card vs Debit card – using credit card means borrowing money from the bank and then paying it back; debit cards are bank-isued cards that take funds directly from the money in your bank account; pre-paid cards are usually anonymous, do not require a bank account, can be bought at shops and online, and are limited to the amount of money you have predeposited.
 
Price – the odds.
 
Problem gambling – a strong desire to gamble despite harmful negative consequences.
 
Proposition bet (also prop bet) – usually a player specific bet (e.g which player to score the first goal, which team to have the first corner etc.), or generally a bet which is concerned with any happenstance in a regular game. Prop bets stand in opposition to traditional bets whereby you predict who wins the game.
 
Punter/ Bettor – the person who puts on a bet.
 
Push – a tie in betting terms.
 
Quinella (also Quiniela) – a bet in which a punter has to predict which the horses will finish 1st and 2nd, regardless of order.
 
Racecard – a daily programme for racing.
 
Rake – commission taken by a pokeroom.
 
RGA (Remote Gambling Association) – est. 2005 as a merger of the Association of Remote Gambling Operators (ARGO) and the Interactive Gaming, Gambling and Betting Association (IGGBA); the associationpromotes equality and adherence to rules and regulations among licensed remote gambling operators.
 
RNG (Random Number Generator) – a computational device which generates a sequence of numbers/symbols that lack any pattern.
 
Rollover (requirement) – the amount of action you have to generate before you will be able to make a withdrawal from your account; for instance you may have to bet through the total amount in your account (deposit plus bonus) once, twice or more.
 
Roulette – a gambling game whereby the players bet on which slot of a rotating disk a little ball will come to rest in; the bets may be placed on: a number, a range of numbers, the colors (red or black), or whether the number is odd or even .
 
Score – £20.
 
Scorecast bet – a bet in which you have to both predict the first player to score and the correct score at the end of 90 minutes play, for example "Lionel Messi to score first and Barcelona to win 3-0."
 
Sharp – a professional gambler.
 
Single – is a bet on a single event.
 
Single Zero – refers to British roulette wheel which has only one 'zero' as opposed to American roulette where there is 'double zero.'
 
Slot games – online games based on slot machines/ one armed bandits.
 
Special bets – unconventional bets where, for instance, the bettor has to predict the number of corners, or bookings, or the time of the first and the last goal scorer.
 
Spread betting (also ATS, Against the Spread betting) – stands in contrast to Win-Draw-Win betting in that it requires accurate prediction – the bettor has to predict whether the outcome will be below or over the spread. For instance, the weaker team in the competition is given 3 points/goals spread by the bookmaker, and when the stronger team wins with 2 points/goals margin only, then, victorious are the bettors who opted for the underdog's win, as they have predicted that the underdog's 3 points spread is a sufficient enough advantage for them to win the bet.
 
Sportsbook – US equivalent of bookmaker.
 
Stake – the amount of money invested on a given bet.
 
Standardbreds – ahorse breed which participate in Harness racing (a form of horse-racing in which the horses usually race in a specified gait pulling two-wheeled carts with a driver, equipped with a long whip, inside). Standardbreds are well-built and solid horses.
 
Stanley Cup – ice hockey club trophy awarded each year to the NHL champion.
 
Steamer – a selection which is very popular among the punters, a bet 'everyone wants to be on.'

Super Bowl – NFL Championship Game.
 
Super Heinzbet – comprises of 120 bets involving 7 selections in different events, that is 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-folds, 21 five-folds, 7 six-folds and 1 seven-fold. At least 2 successful selections are required to obtain a return.

Sure Thing – a bet which is very certain to win.
 
Svenska Spel – in Sweden the statemonopolyfor betting.
 
System – a method of betting based on many mathematical calculations, used by punters to obtain advantage.
